I started my third safari day at 02:17 after almost three hour rest at Cuero 386 checkpoint. I didn't get much sleeping in my hammock but changing to dry clothes was a good idea. After last night swimming I paddled for the rest of the night wearing life jacket. At sunrise I reached the Nursery rapids and stopped at the first one for a short photo session. It is my favorite part of Guadelupe River. Before the first Victoria bridge I saw something that looked like hallucination - a safari racer with a black zaveral paddle paddling jetski instead of a canoe. Then, I saw another guy in water pushing the boat. Well, it appeared to be a real jetski from the safari rescue team. The rescue team needed rescue! The day was hot and humid. Somewhere after Victoria I felt really tired and sleepy. I had to stop and lay down in my boat for a while. A nasty portage around military bridge at the pipe contruction site woke me up. I started to feel better after the Swinging Bridge (Dupont) checkpoint when air temperature went down at sunset. I was able to paddle really hard to the next checkpoint. Saltwater barier. Where is my team captain? Bummer! I didn't have enough water to continue. I had to wait for Connie for 40 minutes. The situation was rather tense. We haven't talked yet what happened there ... Several tandems passed me. I left Saltwater barier just before midnight. |
